Summer productions of the Trial of Louis Riel, which is currently in its 44th year. The performances started as a Centennial Project in 1967. This year marks the 125th anniversary of the Northwest Resistance, and 2010 is the Year of the Métis.

The project focuses on basic filmmaking skills, increasing awareness of First Nations languages and culture, and creating a documentary. In partnership with mispon – A Celebration of Indigenous Filmmaking and First Nations Language Speaking Project, funded by SaskCulture.

SOHL Volunteer Recognition Award

2009 Volunteer Recognition Award Recipient

NASIM AHMED

The Multilingual Association of Regina (MLAR) Board has nominated Nasim Ahmed for the Saskatchewan Organization for Heritage Languages Volunteer Recognition Award.  Nasim Ahmed is an active and reliable volunteer in the multilingual and multicultural community of Regina, Saskatchewan .  She is one of the founding members of the Urdu and Arabic Language Schools in Regina and has been involved in this community at various levels.  Despite being a full time mother, she has tirelessly volunteered for over thirty years, sitting on various boards as well as teaching heritage languages.  Her efforts have greatly contributed to the success of community development initiatives involving Pakistan, England, and Saskatchewan.                                                     

2009 Volunteer Recognition Award Recipient

IRENE YURASHAK

The Green Grove Orthodox Youth Camp has nominated Irene Yurashak for the Saskatchewan Organization for Heritage Languages Volunteer Recognition Award. Irene Yurashak’s dedicated involvement and exceptional commitment as a volunteer within the community and of several organizations is never-ending. She was awarded Woman of the Year in 2008.  Her community involvement includes:

  • Treasurer on the executive, Green Grove Youth Orthodox Camp, Wakaw Lake, Saskatchewan
  • Ukrainian Women’s Association of Canada
  • Ukrainian Museum of Canada
  • Ongoing support of Ukrainian cultural events such as Folkfest and Ukraine in the Park
  • Planning and development of the Saskatoon Ilirion Residence
  • Co-author of the book “The Pysanky: Icon of the Universe
