The
Hungarian School of Saskatoon, sponsored by the Hungarian Society of
Saskatoon and SOHL, started to operate in the fall of 2003. Children
between 3 and 9 years of age are currently attending. The curriculum is
based on both the Hungarian language and Hungarian folk traditions. All
instruction is in Hungarian (immersion).
Our one
to 1.5 hour classes include language sessions (discussions on different
topics, introduction to writing in Hungarian, riddles, tongue-twisters,
rhymes and poems), folk songs and folk-dancing and traditional Hungarian
folk-games, of which rhymes, drama and songs are always an essential part.
We believe what the famous Hungarian music educator, Zoltán Kodály had
said: "If we want to understand other nations, we first must
understand ourselves. There is no better means for this than our folk
songs."
Children
from the class perform on stage several times a year with Hungarian poetry,
songs and folk dance, including at events organized by the Hungarian Society
of Saskatoon. In addition, most of our students participate in Folkfest and
the Minifest with a folk dance choreography for which we practice over the
summer.
