Programs and Services Offered by SOHL

SOHL offers a wide variety of programs designed to assist heritage language schools and heritage language teachers.  The programs currently offered on a regular basis include the following:

Heritage Language Teaching Program:  This program provides funding for Saskatchewan’s heritage language schools, which can be used towards projects, materials, and administration.

Coordinating Agency Workshops:  SOHL provides funding to the Saskatchewan Intercultural Association (SIA) in Saskatoon and the Multilingual Association of Regina (MLAR) to organize one to two professional development workshops each year. These workshops bring together teachers and administrators in their local areas to share ideas and develop their skills.

Heritage Language School Workshops:  Although coordinating agency workshops focus on areas that may be of interest to all heritage language teachers, there are needs by the various language schools to target certain aspects of teaching a specific language that cannot be met by the more general instruction.

Mini-Language Learning Lessons Program:  This program places heritage language teachers in regular school classrooms, so they can deliver linguistic and cultural lessons to students.

Heritage Language Recognition Day:  Each year, SOHL commemorates the UNESCO-proclaimed International Mother Language Day, which is marked annually on February 21st.  SOHL celebrates this occasion in both Regina and Saskatoon by holding a variety of events that celebrate linguistic and cultural diversity.

Youth Heritage Language Instructor-Helper Bursary: This bursary is granted to heritage language student youths, aged 18 and under, who work as instructor-helpers at their respective heritage language schools.  Students should provide 50 – 70 hours of classroom assistance.

University of Calgary Teaching International and Heritage Languages Certificate (TIHL) Bursary: SOHL provides heritage language teachers who teach in Saskatchewan’s language schools with the opportunity to further their education by taking online classes that lead to the obtainment of a TIHL Certificate.

Immersion Camps:  SOHL provides funding for language camps across the province.

Annual Provincial Conference:  The Annual Provincial Conference provides an opportunity for heritage language teachers and volunteers to participate in training workshops and sessions designed to help improve teaching techniques and learn about new activities for language instruction.

SOHL Volunteer Recognition Award:  Started in 2002, the SOHL Volunteer Award recognizes the efforts of teachers, coordinators, parents, and other facilitators of heritage language schools in Saskatchewan, as most heritage language schools run mostly on the efforts of volunteers.  Each year, SOHL awards a deserving recipient at its Banquet, held in conjunction with the Annual Provincial Conference.

‘SOHL Connection’ Radio Program:  SOHL hosts a weekly radio program on CJTR Regina which highlights individuals, activities, and organizations from the multicultural community in Regina.

Member Liability Insurance Coverage:  SOHL provides affordable liability insurance for its member heritage language schools, which covers various activities of the schools.

SOHL Newsletter:  The SOHL newsletter is published biannually, and highlights the activities of SOHL and its many members.

Resource Centre/Materials:  SOHL maintains a small resource center that collects information of interest to heritage language teachers, including lesson plans, workbooks, etc.  This material is available to all SOHL members.  SOHL also periodically conducts research on language education.
