Become a SOHL Member

This program provides financial assistance to heritage language schools to help offset the costs of operating a heritage language school. Funding is allocated to each school following a formula with a base funding amount and an additional amount for each student enrolled.

Conditions of Funding

  1. Schools are eligible to apply for the Heritage Language Teaching Program funding as soon as they become regular members and are teaching weekly classes.

  2. Only schools offering heritage language classes or multilingual organizations facilitating heritage language classes are eligible for funding.

  3. Schools must be open to any interested student.

  4. SOHL financial assistance must be acknowledged on all printed materials and during the first class of the school year.

  5. Funding from SOHL may only be used for the following purposes:

    • Salaries or honorariums for teachers
    • Purchase of classroom materials
    • Costs of facilities Postage, printing, and advertising related to the operation of the language classes.
    • Teacher training and professional development

  6. Applying schools must fill out an application form and submitted along with a detailed budget. Teacher and student lists (complete with addresses and phone numbers) must be forwarded to SOHL office prior to funding being sent out.

  7. Schools receiving financial support through the Heritage Language Teaching program must submit a follow-up form at the end of the school year. Schools failing to do this will not be eligible to receive further funding.
